The False Creek/Charleson Park Off-leash Controversy
I first wrote about this issue in March and on June 1st the fence went up. I have been meaning to get another post out about this since the fence first went up, and then came down, and went back up, and came down, and then back up again.
I thought maybe the furor had passed, but it would appear I was wrong. In Wednesday's edition of everyone's favourite (see tongue in cheek) twice weekly Vancouver paper, the Vancvouer Courier, there ap
peared a story about the ongoing controversy around the fence the city has put up around the waterfall area of Charleson Park to (as the sign in the pic to the right says) "...increase awareness of the on-leash requirement in this area." At this point I should point out that Kelly Kovach who is pictured in and quoted extensively in the article is my neighbour. The article was titled "False Creek off-leash dog fight goes online - Facebook attack leaves dog owner in tears" and goes on to chronicle the story of how the fence came to be there in the first place, the subsequent battle to keep it up, and the online battle of words on "online site" Facebook (Facebook is online, who knew?).
The article seems pretty accurate to me. I am leary to venture to much of an opinion on the matter, except to say I am sure the problems with dogs and their owners (it's rarely the dog's fault) stem from a very small percentage of dog owners. The off-leash area at Charleson Park is huge, but it is not a "dog park" it is an off-leash area in a park that is there for the enjoyment off all.
Have an opinion on the matter? Feel free to leave it below. Keep it clean though or I'll delete it.
