Greater Density Coming to Vancouver's Single-family Neighbourhoods?
Last Thursday the Vancouver Sun reportted on the first draft of Vancouver's ambitious EcoDensity charter. The EcoDensity initiative, launched some months ago by mayor Vancouver Sam Sullivan. The EcoDensity Charter once finalised and adopted in October will work to transform Vancouver into a model of high density and environmental urban design.
Some of the many changes that we Vancouverites could see include medium to high density housing along major arterial routes as well as in neighbourhood shopping areas. In the block behind these areas you may see medium density allowd in formerly single family neighbourhoods. This could take the form of towhouses or more likely in-fill housing / carriage houses.
Other aspects of EcoDensity could include closing some roads to vehicular traffic. And developers could be required to provide cutting-edge enviromental technology into their developments. The charter will strive to provide more housing and more housing options in Vancouver while also striving to make the city more liveable for today but also for the future.
There is an event coming up if you'd like to learn more about the EcoDensity program:
