Fun on Friday: Earth Hour

This Earth Hour thing, in just it's 2nd year, seems to getting a lot of press this year. Not too suprising I guess given the media and public infatuationwith all things green these days. The hour is set for 8pm local time tomorrow, Saturday March 29th and the idea is that participants shut down all their electric devices for one hour at that time.

Many Canadian cities are participating and such iconic Canadian buildings as the "CN Tower, Niagara Falls, Toronto Eaton Centre, Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Honest Ed’s in Ontario; the Olympic Flag, City Hall Clock and all buildings in which the City of Vancouver operate; and the MacDonald Bridge, City Hall, and Parade Square in Halifax"(the website) will be going dark. No mention of the Lions Gate bridge. I would think that the buildings that could really make an impact by turning off their lights in vancouver would be the Hotel Vancouver, the Lions Gate bridge and BC Place stadium.

The Canadian website encourages reads to register with on the International website. By doing so it says you are "you are sending a strong message to our government, and governments around the world, that Canadians want to take action on climate change."

BC Hydro is also a supporter of Earth Hour and in recent email to REALTORs from the British Columbia Real Estate Association the following tips were offered:

  1. Turning off all unnecessary lights and other electricity-consuming equipment at 8 pm for one hour, on Saturday, March 29.
  2. Signing up at www.bchydro.com to receive information on how to be more involved in Earth Hour, including useful tools and tips.
  3. Encouraging friends to participate and sign up online at www.bchydro.com .

Will be turing off you lights tomorrow evening? I can't imagine participation will be very good in Canada if there is a hockey game on
