mls.ca switch to realtor.ca delayed

As any REALTOR will tell you, this is no surprise. The real estate industry is famously old and grouchy about technology changes. The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) informed me this morning that:

The public www.mls.ca  web site will officially change its name to www.REALTOR.ca  on Monday June 30th, 2008. The original launch date, set for late-May, was delayed by CREA due to some concerns raised by various real estate Boards and Associations.

Incidentally "CREA" is the Canadian Real Estate Association. I wonder who those real estate Boards with "concerns" were. I would be surprised if it was us here in Vancouver as the REBGV has actually been quite the real estate technology innovator in the past. We'll just have to wait to see what they've come up.

I am a home buyer and have been looking forward to the enw site with great anticipation. I must admit that this delay is a big black eye for the industry. Especially since the new site had been so well hyped. Looks as if the CREA needs to get itself better organized.

Current search methodsat mls.ca sucks. Real estate agents will do everything in their power to prevent search engine better going consumer friendly. They see it as threat to their bussiness. Not surprised at the delay......

@Buyer - Thanks for you comments. CREA obviously has to try to keep a lot of real estate boards happy and some are more progressive than others.

I too am looking forward to the re-build of MLS.ca. We are lucky in Canada to have anything like it though. In the U.S. there is no one site where you can find 95%+ (I am guessing here) of all the homes for sale in the country.

@Buyer2 - I agree, the old guard, and even some of the not so old guard, of REALTORS are obsessed with the "ownership" of the data, but transparency is the future I am sure. Services and expertise are what we must offer.

Not only is mls.ca a tired old site but the agents themselves make it worse. Typing in CAPS, wrongly spelled words (I saw a house listed recently that said "You will love this HOMB!" and showing pictures of peoples furnature....gawd....like I care if they have a funky couch.

Pythagoras: Thanks for commenting. You are right, many realtors are doing their listings no favours with what they write. At my office all listings are submitted to the Real Estate Board and then the data entry is done there, but I know in many offices and probably most areas across the country agents enter their own listings   (and make their own typos).

I am terrible typist so I am happy have the pros do it, but we must double check their work.

Those pics of furniture maybe that is supposed to be the whole room but they are using a camera without a wide enough angle lens.

New site coming July 2nd they tell.
